Tooth Extractions / Impacted Canines

Although keeping our natural and healthy teeth is considered ideal, there are circumstances when extraction of one or more teeth becomes necessary for the patient’s smile or general overall wellbeing. Dr. Begley welcomes referrals from all over the Southeast Missouri and Illinois area. Their advanced surgical training handles even the most complex cases while keeping patient comfort a top priority.

Common reasons for tooth removal include:
  • Wisdom Teeth – These teeth, often referred to as third molars, are usually removed between the ages of 18 – 22 when they may begin to erupt through the surface. Often there is not enough room for these teeth, they grow in at the wrong angle, or press against other teeth. Sometimes these teeth don’t fully erupt and are considered “impacted”. Patients can experience oral pain, infections, cysts, and even tumors if removal isn’t provided early enough.
  • Orthodontic Treatment – When planning to correct a patient’s smile, an orthodontist may find that the teeth are too crowded or not positioned well for a successful procedure. Extractions can create room for movement and give other teeth more space to settle into their proper places.
  • Damaged Teeth – Sometimes teeth can become injured or decayed. While every effort to save and restore these teeth is made, there are times when a replacement (dental implant) is necessary. There are several situations when an extraction is necessary including periodontal disease, infections, or severe fractures.

At the Center for Oral Surgery, patient comfort is our first concern. Dr. Begley utilizes anesthesia and sedation methods to ensure that the process is as comfortable as possible. They are highly skilled and experienced and use the latest technology.
