Dental Implants

If you are wanting a full and confident smile or to regain the ability to eat and speak naturally, dental implants may be the advanced treatment option you are looking for. The specialists at The Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery have served Southeast Missouri for over 35 years promoting cutting-edge implant therapy.

An Overview of Dental Implants

Dental Implants is a team effort between your restorative dentist and the oral surgeons at the Center for Oral Surgery. Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed in the jawbone. We use implants to replace the roots that are either missing or damaged. When the implant site is healed, your restorative dentist will place a new crown to complete the restoration.

How Can Implants Restore Your Smile

Are you wondering if Dental Implants make sense for you? For most, restoring your smile is a priority and for those who have unhealthy, missing, broken, or other issues with their teeth, dental implants can be life-changing.
Dental Implants can be used for:
  • Single tooth replacement or small gaps – This restoration requires a single implant placed in the jawbone where it will create an artificial tooth root. This provides a firm foundation for your natural looking crown placed by your restorative dentist.
  • Several teeth or larger gaps – In this type of restoration, a partial prosthesis (fixed bridge) may be used and may only require two or three implants.
  • Total Tooth Loss – This type of restoration is a permanent denture and cannot be removed like a traditional denture. Therefore it is treated and cared for just like natural teeth. They are brushed, flossed, and given regular dental checkups.
All of these processes result in teeth that look, function, and are cared for just like natural teeth. Implants usually last for decades with careful oral hygiene care.

Image Guided Surgery

At the Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our Doctors use 3D-Image Guided Surgery – the most advanced implant surgery system. Three dimensional CAT scan imaging and computer-guided surgical technology makes it possible for our oral surgeons to work with your restorative dentist to plan the best treatment for you. This system provides minimally invasive and more precise dental implant placement during surgery.

Advantages 3D Image Guided Surgery:
  • Faster, less invasive, more comfortable and less post-operative pain
  • More accurate implant placement
  • Quicker recovery times

Bone Grafting

When preparing for dental implants, many patients will either have immediate placement or delayed placement of their implants. A patient who has good bone quality would be a good candidate for immediate placement.

Delayed placement is for those with less than good bone quality. Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, many patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants. Today, we have the ability to grow bone where needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.
